Hurricane Plumbing Prep for Miami Homes

Plumbing work to do in spring
Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the plumbing jobs that matter take longer to schedule than shutters. Search interest for plumbers in Miami peaked in September 2026 at more than double the usual month, and drain-cleaning searches went up more than twentyfold, so the busiest weeks for plumbers are exactly when you would want one. Spring is the time for the items below.
A backwater valve on the sewer line
When heavy rain and storm surge overload the sewer system, sewage can push back up the lateral into the lowest drains in a house. A backwater valve is a one-way flap in the building sewer that closes when flow reverses. Plumbing codes require one where fixtures sit below the level of the next upstream manhole; many older low-lying Miami houses do not have one at all. Installing it means digging at the lateral, usually near the cleanout, and needs a permit. It also needs occasional checking so the flap still moves.
Generators and gas
A permanently installed standby generator on natural gas or propane is gas piping and electrical work, and in Miami-Dade it needs a permit with plans; in unincorporated areas the county's checklist lists them, and cities run their own. The gas line has to be sized for the generator's demand, which is often far more than the water heater or range it shares a meter with. Portable generators are a different risk: the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade has warned after storms against running them in a garage or near windows, because carbon monoxide kills people in the days after hurricanes. Neither is a last-week purchase.
The week a storm is named
- Find your main shutoff and make sure it turns. Spray a stuck valve now, not after.
- Fill clean containers with tap water once a warning is issued; the county has advised a gallon per person and pet per day.
- Your water heater tank is stored water too. Know how to switch it off and draw from the drain valve.
- Bring hoses in and cap hose bibs; secure or remove anything that could break an exposed pipe.
- If you are on septic, avoid heavy water use as the ground saturates.
Once the hurricane has passed
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer has asked residents after storms to keep water use down, because pressure may be lower than normal and the wastewater system is under load, and to keep manhole covers closed even when streets flood, because opening them sends stormwater into the sewer. If water comes out cloudy, the county's advice has been to run the tap until it clears; follow any boil-water notice to the letter. Before restarting a gas water heater or generator, check for the smell of gas and for damage to the piping, and leave anything doubtful to the gas utility or a contractor.

Common questions
Do I need a backwater valve?
If your lowest drains sit below the street or the nearest upstream manhole, or if neighbours have had sewage backups during storms, it is worth asking a plumber to assess. It is cheap compared with cleaning up one backup.
Can I connect a portable generator to my house wiring?
Only through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock, which is electrical work. Back-feeding through an outlet can kill utility workers.
Should I turn off my water before evacuating?
Closing the main shutoff before you leave limits damage if a pipe breaks while the house is empty. Switch the water heater off too.
